In Matthew 7:1-5, even the command not to judge is not a soft call to moral indifference. It is a demand that hypocrisy be exposed before one presumes to correct another. Then the chapter keeps narrowing the road. In Matthew 7:13-14, life is found on the way that is narrow and difficult, which immediately confronts every instinct to look for a broad path that still ends well. False prophets and false profession deepen that exposure. By Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus makes clear that even verbal allegiance and visible religious activity can coexist with final rejection. The issue is not whether his name is used, but whether the Father’s will is done. Then the chapter ends in Matthew 7:24-27 with the two builders. Both hear. Only one obeys. Matthew 7 matters because it destroys the fantasy that closeness to Christian language is the same as surrender to Christ. It asks whether your life is actually built on obedience to his words, or whether you are still standing on sand while calling him Lord.

Denn die Pforte ist weit, und der Weg ist breit, der ins Verderben führt, und viele sind es, die da hineingehen. 14 Aber die Pforte ist eng, und der Weg ist schmal, der zum Leben führt, und wenige sind es, die ihn finden! 15 Hütet euch aber vor den falschen Propheten, welche in Schafskleidern zu euch kommen, inwendig aber reißende Wölfe sind. 16 An ihren Früchten sollt ihr sie erkennen. Sammelt man auch Trauben von Dornen, oder Feigen von Disteln? 17 So bringt ein jeder gute Baum gute Früchte, der faule Baum aber bringt schlechte Früchte. 18 Ein guter Baum kann nicht schlechte Früchte bringen, und ein fauler Baum kann nicht gute Früchte bringen. 19 Ein jeder Baum, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen. 20 Darum sollt ihr sie an ihren Früchten erkennen. 21 Nicht jeder, der zu mir sagt: «Herr, Herr», wird in das Himmelreich eingehen, sondern wer den Willen meines Vaters im Himmel tut. 22 Viele werden an jenem Tage zu mir sagen: Herr, Herr, haben wir nicht in deinem Namen geweissagt und in deinem Namen Dämonen ausgetrieben und in deinem Namen viele Taten vollbracht? 23 Und dann werde ich ihnen bezeugen: Ich habe euch nie gekannt; weichet von mir, ihr Übeltäter! 24 Ein jeder nun, der diese meine Worte hört und sie tut, ist einem klugen Manne zu vergleichen, der sein Haus auf den Felsen baute. 25 Als nun der Platzregen fiel und die Wasserströme kamen und die Winde wehten und an dieses Haus stießen, fiel es nicht; denn es war auf den Felsen gegründet. 26 Und ein jeder, der diese meine Worte hört und sie nicht tut, wird einem törichten Manne gleich sein, der sein Haus auf den Sand baute. 27 Als nun der Platzregen fiel und die Wasserströme kamen und die Winde wehten und an dieses Haus stießen, da fiel es, und sein Fall war groß. 28 Und es begab sich, als Jesus diese Rede beendet hatte, entsetzte sich das Volk über seine Lehre. 29 Denn er lehrte sie wie einer, der Vollmacht hat, und nicht wie ihre Schriftgelehrten.
