Joshua 1 is given at a moment when fear could easily masquerade as realism. Moses is dead. The land still lies ahead. The task is public, costly, and larger than Joshua. That is why the chapter matters: God does not answer the transition by enlarging Joshua’s self-belief. He answers it with his presence and his word. In Joshua 1:5-9, the repeated command to be strong and courageous is inseparable from the promise that the Lord will be with him. Courage here is not personality. It is obedience under divine presence. Then Joshua 1:8 presses even deeper. Leadership is to be shaped by meditation on the word, not by impulse, charisma, or improvisation. The chapter understands something many do not: fear is not only conquered by comfort, but by sustained submission to what God has said. By the time the people answer in Joshua 1:16-18, the public dimension of the calling is clear. Joshua 1 matters because it asks what kind of courage actually leads the people of God. Denn du, du sollst diesem Volk das Land als Erbe austeilen, das ich ihren Vätern geschworen habe, ihnen zu geben. 7 Nur sei sehr stark und mutig, dass du darauf achtest, zu tun nach dem ganzen Gesetz, das mein Knecht Mose dir geboten hat. Weiche nicht davon ab zur Rechten noch zur Linken, damit es dir gelinge überall, wohin du gehst. 8 Dieses Buch des Gesetzes soll nicht von deinem Mund weichen, und du sollst darüber sinnen Tag und Nacht, damit du darauf achtest, zu tun nach allem, was darin geschrieben ist; denn dann wirst du auf deinem Weg Erfolg haben, und dann wird es dir gelingen. 9 Habe ich dir nicht geboten: Sei stark und mutig? Erschrick nicht und fürchte dich nicht! Denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist mit dir überall, wohin du gehst. 10 Und Josua gebot den Vorstehern des Volkes und sprach: Geht mitten durch das Lager und gebietet dem Volk und sprecht: 11 Bereitet euch Zehrung; denn in noch drei Tagen werdet ihr über diesen Jordan ziehen, um hinzukommen, das Land in Besitz zu nehmen, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch gibt, es zu besitzen. 12 Und zu den Rubenitern und zu den Gaditern und zu dem halben Stamm Manasse sprach Josua und sagte: 13 Gedenkt des Wortes, das Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, euch geboten hat, indem er sprach: Der HERR, euer Gott, schafft euch Ruhe und gibt euch dieses Land. 14 Eure Frauen, eure Kinder und euer Vieh sollen in dem Land bleiben, das Mose euch diesseits des Jordan gegeben hat; ihr aber, alle kampfbereiten Männer, sollt gerüstet vor euren Brüdern hinüberziehen und ihnen helfen, 15 bis der HERR euren Brüdern Ruhe schafft wie euch, und auch sie das Land besitzen, das der HERR, euer Gott, ihnen gibt. Dann sollt ihr in das Land eures Besitztums zurückkehren und es besitzen, das Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, euch gegeben hat, diesseits des Jordan, gegen Sonnenaufgang. 16 Und sie antworteten Josua und sprachen: Alles, was du uns geboten hast, wollen wir tun, und wohin irgend du uns senden wirst, wollen wir gehen. 17 Nach allem, wie wir Mose gehorcht haben, so wollen wir dir gehorchen. Nur möge der HERR, dein Gott, mit dir sein, wie er mit Mose gewesen ist! 18 Jedermann, der deinem Befehl widerspenstig ist und nicht auf deine Worte hört in allem, was du uns gebietest, soll getötet werden. Nur sei stark und mutig!
