Isaiah 40

Isaiah 40 announces comfort, unmasks human frailty, magnifies the incomparable God, and calls weary people to renewed strength under his word.

Kapitelkommentar öffnen

Isaiah 40 is not gentle comfort for people who want to remain impressed with man and only slightly encouraged about God. The chapter begins in Isaiah 40:1-5 with the command to comfort God’s people, but that comfort is tied immediately to the coming revelation of the glory of the Lord. Then Isaiah 40:6-8 cuts through human self-importance: all flesh is grass, its beauty fades, but the word of our God stands forever. That means consolation is not built on human resilience. It is built on divine permanence. The chapter keeps pressing upward. In Isaiah 40:21-26, the Lord is set above nations, rulers, and stars, incomparable in majesty and unsearchable in power. Only then does the promise of Isaiah 40:28-31 land with its proper force. The weary are not being told to gather strength from themselves. They are being called to wait on the everlasting God who does not faint. Isaiah 40 matters because it asks whether you want comfort without surrendering your small view of God, and whether you can receive strength only by admitting how exhausted and creaturely you really are.

Wie sich das Kapitel entfaltet

The chapter moves from the cry of comfort and the way of the Lord into the fading of flesh, the greatness of God, and the promise of strength for the faint.

Warum dieses Kapitel wichtig ist

It matters because it teaches that comfort becomes real only when God is seen as incomparable and his word as unfailing.

Auslegungsfrage im Blick behalten

Do not turn Isaiah 40 into soft encouragement detached from theology. Its comfort is built on the weight of God’s majesty over every rival.

Fragen zu diesem Kapitel

  • Why does Isaiah 40 root comfort in the revelation of God’s greatness rather than in changed circumstances first?
  • How does the contrast between fading flesh and enduring word confront human self-importance?
  • What does the promise of renewed strength reveal about waiting on God instead of trying to outlast exhaustion alone?

Isaiah 40:31 · Hebrew Zum Text

qavah (qavah)
