Revelation 19 is the Bible's only chapter with "Hallelujah" in it, and it uses the word four times. A great multitude in heaven praises God for judging Babylon, and the roar of many waters announces that the Lord God Almighty reigns and the marriage of the Lamb has come, his bride dressed in fine linen. John tries to worship the angel and is told to worship God. Then heaven opens and a rider on a white horse appears, called Faithful and True, the Word of God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, with a sword from his mouth and a robe dipped in blood. The beast and the false prophet are thrown into the lake of fire, and the birds feast on their armies.

Revelation 19 is the sound of heaven cheering. After two chapters watching Babylon, the great city that grew rich on cruelty and drank the blood of the saints, go up in smoke, John hears something like a vast crowd shouting the word the Psalms use for their loudest praise: Hallelujah. Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, because his judgments are true, because he has answered the cry of the martyrs under the altar that goes back to chapter 6. The elders and living creatures say Amen, a voice from the throne calls everyone to praise, and then a roar like many waters announces the news the whole book has been waiting for: the Lord God Almighty reigns, and the wedding of the Lamb has come. The bride is ready, dressed in linen that is both given to her and made of the saints' righteous deeds. Blessed are those invited to the supper. John is so overwhelmed that he falls at the angel's feet and is sharply told to get up; worship God. Then heaven opens, and the rider comes. He is called Faithful and True, his eyes are fire, his crowns are many, his robe is already soaked in blood before a blow is struck, and his name is the Word of God. Armies follow him but do not fight; the sword is in his mouth. The beast and the false prophet gather every king on earth against him, and the battle takes one verse. The chapter that began with a wedding invitation ends with the birds of the air called to a very different supper.

Historical and literary context

John wrote to churches in the Roman province of Asia toward the end of the first century, and "Babylon," judged in chapters 17 and 18, is Rome, the city on seven hills that had martyred Christians and demanded worship of the emperor. "Hallelujah" is a Hebrew liturgical cry from the Psalms, transliterated into Greek here and nowhere else in the New Testament. The wedding feast draws on Jesus' parables and on Israel as God's bride in Hosea and Isaiah. The rider on the white horse reverses the conquering rider of chapter 6, and his titles answer the imperial titles of Rome's emperors. The great supper of birds echoes Ezekiel 39, and the winepress and the iron scepter come from Isaiah 63 and Psalm 2.

How the chapter unfolds

Verses 1 to 5 are the heavenly Hallelujah over Babylon's fall, in three bursts with the elders' Amen between. Verses 6 to 10 announce the marriage of the Lamb, the bride's linen, the beatitude on those invited to the supper, and the angel's refusal of John's worship. Verses 11 to 16 present the rider on the white horse with his names, eyes, crowns, robe, armies, sword, scepter, and winepress. Verses 17 and 18 summon the birds to the great supper of God. Verses 19 to 21 record the last battle, which is over in a sentence: the beast and false prophet captured and thrown into the lake of fire, the rest killed by the sword from the rider's mouth.

Why this chapter matters

The Hallelujah chorus of verse 6, "For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns," became the text of the most famous movement in Handel's Messiah, and "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" from verse 16 is sung in the same piece. The marriage supper of the Lamb is the Bible's culminating image of salvation as a feast and has shaped Christian understanding of the Eucharist and of the church as bride. "The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy" in verse 10 is a key to the whole book. The rider whose weapon is the word from his mouth, not a sword in his hand, has been the church's picture of how Christ conquers.

Interpretive tension to watch

The chapter sets a wedding feast beside a feast of carrion birds, and readers must hold the joy and the horror together; John intends the contrast. The rider's robe is dipped in blood before the battle begins, which most take as his own blood from the cross rather than his enemies', so that the victory is already won. Whether the battle of verses 19 to 21 is a literal future war, a symbol of Christ's final victory, or the same event described in chapters 16 and 20 from different angles is debated among the main schools of interpretation. The bride's linen is both "given" to her and "the righteous acts of the saints," a compression of grace and works in one verse.

Domande per questo capitolo

  • Heaven says Hallelujah over the fall of Babylon. Is it right to rejoice at judgment, and what does the chapter say the judgment is for?
  • The rider conquers with a sword from his mouth. What does it mean that Christ's weapon is his word?
  • John falls down before the angel and is corrected. Why is the warning against worshiping messengers placed in the middle of this vision?
