Psalm 27 is not a tidy devotional slogan about courage. It is a chapter for people who know both what it means to speak confidence and what it means to plead for God not to hide his face. In Psalm 27:1-4, the psalmist announces that the Lord is his light, salvation, and stronghold, and then fixes his deepest desire on dwelling in the house of the Lord and beholding his beauty.
