Numbers 21 is not a chapter for people who want salvation without confession. Israel speaks against God and Moses again, and the result is not a harmless setback but fiery judgment in Numbers 21:4-6. The serpents reveal what unbelief deserves. Yet the chapter does not end in death. In Numbers 21:7-9 the people confess, Moses intercedes, and God appoints a means of healing that strips away all boasting. They are not told to prove themselves better. They are told to look where God tells them to look. That is why the chapter later becomes so important in John 3:14-15. But Numbers 21 keeps going. The well song in Numbers 21:16-18 and the victories over kings in Numbers 21:21-35 show that the same people who deserved judgment continue only because God keeps leading and providing. Numbers 21 matters because it asks whether you still think your problem is weakness alone, or whether you see that your sin is deadly and your only hope is to receive the mercy God himself lifts up before your eyes.
