Judges 7 is not a chapter about maximizing limited resources. It is about God dismantling every excuse for boasting. In Judges 7:2 the Lord says Israel must not go to battle with a large army because they would say, “Mine own hand hath saved me.” That sentence exposes the real enemy beneath Midian: the heart that wants divine help without surrendering self-glory. So the army is cut down, not improved. Gideon himself still trembles, which is why the Lord meets him in the night in Judges 7:9-15 and lets him overhear a dream that confirms God’s purpose. Then the battle begins in a way no strategist would trust. Trumpets, jars, torches, and a cry in Judges 7:16-22 become the means by which Midian collapses in confusion. Judges 7 matters because it asks whether you still measure God’s work by visible strength, or whether you can accept a salvation that leaves no room for the flesh to congratulate itself.
