Ezra 7 is not mainly interested in introducing a competent administrator. It introduces a man whose life has already been ordered by the law of God before he ever steps into public responsibility. In Ezra 7:6, Ezra is described as a skilled scribe in the law of Moses, but the chapter does not leave that skill at the level of technique. In Ezra 7:10, the central line explains why he matters: he had set his heart to seek the law of the Lord, to do it, and to teach it in Israel. That order is crucial. Study, obedience, and teaching belong together. Then the chapter unfolds through the king’s decree and the surprising favor given to Ezra, yet even there the deepest explanation is not imperial generosity. By Ezra 7:27-28, Ezra blesses the Lord for putting this into the king’s heart and for strengthening him. Ezra 7 matters because it asks whether you still imagine spiritual restoration can be carried by position and efficiency alone, or whether you can see that God rebuilds his people through leaders whose hearts are first bent under his word.
