Curvar la testa come un giunco, sdraiarsi sul sacco e sulla cenere, è egli questo che tu chiami un digiuno, un giorno accetto all’Eterno? 6 Il digiuno di cui mi compiaccio non è egli questo: che si spezzino le catene della malvagità, che si sciolgano i legami del giogo, che si lascino liberi gli oppressi, e che s’infranga ogni sorta di giogo? 7 Non è egli questo: che tu divida il tuo pane con chi ha fame, che tu meni a casa tua gl’infelici senz’asilo, che quando vedi uno ignudo tu lo copra, e che tu non ti nasconda a colui ch’è carne della tua carne? 8 Allora la tua luce spunterà come l’aurora, e la tua guarigione germoglierà prontamente; la tua giustizia ti precederà, e la gloria dell’Eterno sarà la tua retroguardia. 9 Allora chiamerai, e l’Eterno ti risponderà; griderai, ed egli dirà: “Eccomi!” Se tu togli di mezzo a te il giogo, il gesto minaccioso ed il parlare iniquo; 10 se l’anima tua supplisce ai bisogni dell’affamato, e sazi l’anima afflitta, la tua luce si leverà nelle tenebre, e la tua notte oscura sarà come il mezzodì; 11 l’Eterno ti guiderà del continuo, sazierà l’anima tua ne’ luoghi aridi, darà vigore alle tue ossa; e tu sarai come un giardino ben annaffiato, come una sorgente la cui acqua non manca mai. 12 I tuoi riedificheranno le antiche ruine; tu rialzerai le fondamenta gettate da molte età, e sarai chiamato “il riparatore delle brecce”, “il restauratore de’ sentieri per rendere abitabile il paese”. 13 Se tu trattieni il piè per non violare il sabato facendo i tuoi affari nel mio santo giorno; se chiami il sabato una delizia, e venerabile ciò ch’è sacro all’Eterno, e se onori quel giorno anziché seguir le tue vie e fare i tuoi affari e discuter le tue cause, 14 allora troverai la tua delizia nell’Eterno; io ti farò passare in cocchio sulle alture del paese, ti nutrirò delle eredità di Giacobbe tuo padre, poiché la bocca dell’Eterno ha parlato.
