Romans 3 closes every human mouth before God and then unveils the righteousness of God in Christ for sinners who cannot justify themselves.

Romans 3 brings humanity to the place it most resists: silence before the holy God. Paul does not leave room for moral optimism or religious advantage. In Romans 3:10-20, the whole world is brought under sin, and the law functions not as a ladder upward but as a witness that shuts every mouth. That means the chapter does not merely criticize particularly bad people. It condemns the whole human project of self-justification. Then comes one of the great turns in Scripture. In Romans 3:21-26, the righteousness of God is manifested apart from the law through faith in Jesus Christ. God remains just, and yet he justifies the ungodly through the blood of Christ. This is not divine leniency. It is costly righteousness. By Romans 3:27-28, boasting is gone. Romans 3 matters because it asks whether you are still trying to bring something of your own to the verdict of God, or whether you have been emptied enough to receive a righteousness you could never produce.

8 A ne raději (jakž o nás zle mluví a jakož někteří praví, že bychom říkali,): Èiňme zlé věci, aby přišly dobré? Jichžto spravedlivé jest odsouzení. 9 Což tedy? My převyšujeme pohany? 11 Není rozumného, není, kdo by hledal Boha. 12 Všickni se uchýlili, spolu neužiteční učiněni jsou; není, kdo by činil dobré, není ani jednoho. 13 Hrob otevřený hrdlo jejich, jazyky svými lstivě mluvili, jed lítých hadů pod rty jejich. 14 Kterýchžto ústa plná jsou zlořečení a hořkosti. 15 Nohy jejich rychlé k vylévání krve. 16 Setření a bída na cestách jejich. 17 A cesty pokoje nepoznali. Všickniť zajisté zhřešili, a nemají slávy Boží. Ba, jistě i pohanů, 30 Poněvadž jeden jest Bůh, kterýž ospravedlňuje obřízku z víry, a neobřízku skrze víru. 31 Což tedy Zákon vyprazdňujeme skrze víru? Nikoli, nýbrž Zákon tvrdíme.

Verses 3:9-20 Deep

The law silences every mouth before it saves no one

Open

Paul gathers the testimony of Scripture to strip the human race of every claim to innocence. The law’s ministry here is not to provide a ladder upward but to expose guilt so completely that boasting dies.

Key passages
Verses 3:21-26 Deep

God remains just by justifying through blood-bought righteousness

Open

The turning point of Romans 3 is not that God relaxes his holiness. It is that he manifests righteousness apart from the law through Christ, so that mercy is grounded in propitiation and justice is upheld while sinners are justified.

💥 Truth

Grace is not God overlooking sin. It is God dealing with sin so fully in Christ that boasting is forever silenced.

Verses 3:27-31 Standard

Faith removes boasting because salvation remains God’s work

Open

Once justification is received by faith, human boasting has nowhere left to stand. Paul’s conclusion protects grace and shows that faith does not overthrow the law’s true witness but establishes it in Christ.
