In John 17:14-19, Jesus does not ask that his disciples be removed from the world, but that they be kept and sanctified within it by the truth. That means mission and holiness are joined. And by John 17:20-23, the prayer extends to future believers, pressing toward a unity that is rooted in divine truth and shared life, not mere human agreement. John 17 matters because it asks whether the church wants the kind of unity and protection Christ actually prays for, or only versions that cost less than sanctification and truth.
