Ruth 1 does not invite the reader into romance first. It invites the reader into famine, graves, and the return of a woman who believes the Almighty has dealt bitterly with her. That matters because the chapter will not let hope begin in pleasant atmosphere. It begins where life appears emptied out. In Ruth 1:6, Naomi hears that the Lord has visited his people with bread, but even that news comes after husband and sons are gone. Then the chapter turns toward one of the most important acts of covenant loyalty in the book. In Ruth 1:16-17, Ruth refuses to separate herself from Naomi, binding herself not only to Naomi’s people but to Naomi’s God. Yet even that radiant vow does not erase the ache of the scene. By Ruth 1:20-21, Naomi names herself bitter and speaks as one who has returned empty. Ruth 1 matters because it asks whether you can still walk under God’s hand when providence feels severe, and whether you can recognize that loyal love may be the first sign of redemption long before the harvest appears.
