Matthew 6 speaks to one of the most respectable forms of spiritual corruption: the desire to seem devout while the heart remains dependent on human notice and earthly security. In Matthew 6:1-6, Jesus strips public righteousness of its glamour. Giving, prayer, and fasting may all be outwardly correct and inwardly rotten when they are performed to be seen. The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 is not a polished formula for religious control. It is the language of a life turned toward the Father’s name, kingdom, will, provision, pardon, and protection. From there the chapter presses into treasure and trust. In Matthew 6:19-24, what a person stores up and serves reveals where the heart already bows. And by Matthew 6:25-34, anxiety is not treated as a minor emotional inconvenience. It is exposed as life lived as though the Father must be supplemented by fear. Matthew 6 matters because it confronts both visible religion and hidden unbelief. It asks whether your piety is truly Father-facing, or whether you are still living to be seen, secured, and justified by things beneath God.
