Matthew 25 closes Jesus' last great discourse with three parables about being ready for his return. Ten bridesmaids wait for a bridegroom who is delayed; five brought extra oil and five did not, and when he arrives at midnight the unprepared find the door shut. A master entrusts talents to three servants; two trade and double them and hear "Well done, good and faithful servant," while the third buries his out of fear and is thrown out. Finally the Son of Man sits on his throne and separates the nations like sheep from goats, and the test is what they did for the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned: "whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me."

Matthew 25 is Jesus' last teaching before the passion begins, and it answers a question the disciples had asked on the Mount of Olives: how do we live until you come back? He answers with three stories. In the first, ten bridesmaids wait for a groom who is late, and all of them fall asleep; the difference is not that the wise stayed awake but that they had brought oil, and when the cry comes at midnight, readiness turns out to be something you cannot borrow. In the second, a man going abroad hands his fortune to three servants in different amounts, and comes home to find that two have put it to work and one has buried it out of fear. The reward for the two is identical, which means the master was measuring faithfulness, not results. The third is judged not for losing the money but for being too afraid of his master to try. In the last, the Son of Man sits on his throne and divides the whole human race like a shepherd sorting sheep from goats at evening, and the question is not what they believed but what they did about hunger, thirst, strangers, nakedness, sickness, and prison. Both groups are surprised; neither knew that the person in need was Jesus. The chapter's three lessons are one lesson: the time between now and his coming is not a waiting room. It is the test.

Historical and literary context

The chapter is the second half of the Olivet Discourse, spoken on the Mount of Olives in the last week before the crucifixion, after the disciples asked about the end of the age. Village weddings involved a night-time procession in which the groom came to fetch the bride while attendants waited with torches or lamps. A talent was a weight of silver worth roughly twenty years of a laborer's wages, so even the one-talent servant held a fortune. Shepherds in Palestine grazed sheep and goats together by day and separated them at night, since goats need more shelter. The works of mercy in verses 35 and 36 match the duties Jewish tradition drew from Isaiah 58 and Job 31.

How the chapter unfolds

Verses 1 to 13, the ten virgins: the delay, the sleep, the midnight cry, the shortage of oil, the shut door, and the lesson to keep watch. Verses 14 to 30, the talents: the entrusting, the long absence, the reckoning, the identical praise for the five- and two-talent servants, the fearful excuse of the third, and his judgment. Verses 31 to 46, the sheep and the goats: the enthroned Son of Man, the separation, the welcome of the blessed with its six works of mercy, the surprise of the righteous, the dismissal of the cursed with the same six works omitted, and the final line on eternal punishment and eternal life.

Why this chapter matters

The English word "talent," meaning a natural gift, comes from this parable, which has shaped the Christian sense that abilities are entrusted and must be used. "Well done, good and faithful servant" is the phrase most Christians hope to hear and the one most often spoken at funerals. The sheep and the goats is the New Testament's clearest statement that faith is judged by concrete mercy, and "the least of these" has driven hospitals, prisons ministry, and relief work for two thousand years. The shut door of the first parable is the source of the church's teaching that readiness cannot be borrowed at the last minute.

Interpretive tension to watch

"The least of these brothers of Mine" has been read two ways: as all the poor and suffering, or, since Matthew uses "brothers" for disciples, as Jesus' own followers, so that the nations are judged by how they received his messengers. The two readings lead to different sermons but the same demand for mercy. The sheep and the goats also seem to teach judgment by works, which readers must hold together with Matthew's own emphasis on faith and with Paul. And the wise virgins' refusal to share oil troubles readers until they see that readiness is the one thing that cannot be transferred.

  • The third servant hid his talent because he was afraid of his master. How does a wrong picture of God lead to a wasted life?
  • Both the sheep and the goats are surprised by the verdict. What does that say about how people measure their own faithfulness?
  • Whether "the least of these" means all the poor or Jesus' followers, what would change in your week if you took verse 40 literally?
