Revelation 12 pulls back the curtain on the conflict behind the whole book. A woman clothed with the sun cries out in labor, and a great red dragon waits to devour her child. The child, who will rule the nations, is snatched up to God's throne, and the woman flees to a place prepared in the wilderness for 1,260 days. War breaks out in heaven; Michael throws down the dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan, the accuser. A voice announces that the brothers have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Cast to earth and furious, the dragon pursues the woman, who escapes on eagle's wings, and then makes war on the rest of her children.

Revelation 12 is the chapter that explains the rest of the book, and it does so by telling a story everyone in the ancient world knew and giving it a different ending. A woman in the sky, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with twelve stars, is in labor. A red dragon with seven heads is waiting in front of her to eat the baby the moment it is born. The child is born, a son who will rule the nations, and instead of being devoured he is caught up to God's throne, and the woman escapes into the desert to a place God has prepared. Then the scene shifts to heaven, where a war is fought and lost by the dragon; Michael throws him down, and John names him with every name he has: the great dragon, the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, the accuser who accused the brothers day and night. A voice in heaven explains what it means. Now the salvation and the kingdom have come, because the accuser is gone, and the brothers beat him, not with armies, but by the blood of the Lamb and by holding to their testimony even when it killed them. Heaven is told to rejoice. Earth is told something else: the devil has come down to you in a rage because he knows his time is short. That is John's answer to the churches asking why they are suffering. The dragon chases the woman, the earth swallows his flood, and he goes off to make war on her other children, the ones who keep God's commandments and hold the testimony of Jesus. The reader is one of them.

Historical and literary context

John wrote to the churches of Asia in the late first century, when Rome demanded the emperor's worship and Christians were beginning to die for refusing it. The chapter reworks a story pattern known across the ancient world, a divine child threatened at birth by a monster, told of Apollo and the dragon Python, and of the goddess Isis, and turns it against the empire that used such myths for itself. The woman recalls Israel, Joseph's dream of sun, moon, and stars, and Eve, whose seed would crush the serpent; the child is the Messiah of Psalm 2. The 1,260 days, three and a half years, and "a time, times, and half a time" come from Daniel, where they measure the persecution under Antiochus. The eagle's wings echo the exodus. Michael as Israel's defender comes from Daniel 10 and 12.

How the chapter unfolds

Verses 1 to 6 present the two signs in heaven, the woman and the dragon, the birth and rescue of the child, and the woman's flight to the wilderness. Verses 7 to 9 narrate the war in heaven and the dragon's fall, with his four names. Verses 10 to 12 are the heavenly hymn: salvation and the kingdom have come, the accuser is thrown down, the brothers conquered by the Lamb's blood and their testimony, and heaven rejoices while earth is warned that the devil's time is short. Verses 13 to 17 return to earth: the pursuit of the woman, her escape on eagle's wings, the river from the serpent's mouth swallowed by the earth, and the dragon's war on her other children.

Why this chapter matters

This chapter is the center of Revelation's explanation of why the church suffers: not because evil is winning but because it has already lost in heaven and is furious on earth with little time left. Verse 11, "They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony," has been the martyrs' text in every persecution. The woman clothed with the sun became, in Catholic devotion, an image of Mary and the emblem of Guadalupe, and in Protestant reading the church across the ages. Satan as "the accuser of our brothers" and the announcement that the accuser has been thrown down underlie the Christian confidence that no charge against believers stands.

Interpretive tension to watch

The woman has been read as Mary, as Israel, as the church, and as the people of God in both testaments, and the chapter's symbolism supports more than one at once. The war in heaven is placed by some at the fall of the angels before creation, by others at Christ's death and ascension, which the hymn of verse 10 suggests, and by others at the end of history. The 1,260 days are taken literally, as a symbolic span of the church age, or as the whole time between the ascension and the return. The chapter's reuse of a pagan myth raises the question of how much Revelation borrows from its world and how much it subverts it.

  • The chapter says the devil is furious because his time is short. How does knowing that the accuser has already been thrown down change how you face accusation and fear?
  • The brothers conquered "by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony," even at the cost of their lives. What does conquering look like when it does not look like winning?
  • The woman is carried to the wilderness and fed there. Where has God's protection for you looked more like a desert than a fortress?
