Historical and literary context
The heading names David, and the psalm speaks with the voice of age: "I once was young and now am old." It belongs to the wisdom tradition alongside Psalm 1 and Psalm 73, written for a community in which land was livelihood and the sight of ruthless people thriving on it was a daily provocation. Its promise that the meek "will inherit the land" carried the weight of Israel's whole story of promised ground, and Jesus took the line up unchanged in the Beatitudes.
How the chapter unfolds
The psalm is an acrostic, moving through the Hebrew alphabet in pairs of verses, which gives it a circling rather than linear shape. Three times it commands "do not fret" (verses 1, 7, 8). Five times it promises that the righteous will "inherit the land" (verses 9, 11, 22, 29, 34). Between those refrains it alternates portraits of the wicked, who wither, are cut off, and vanish like smoke, with portraits of the righteous, whose steps are ordered, whose little is better than abundance, and whose fall is never final because "the LORD is holding his hand."
Why this chapter matters
Psalm 37 matters because it refuses two easy responses to injustice: outrage and envy. Fretting, it says, "can only bring harm." Instead it hands the reader a sequence of verbs that reorder the heart: trust, do good, delight, commit, be still, wait. Verse 4, "Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart," is often quoted as a promise of getting what one wants; in the psalm it describes a heart whose wants have been reshaped by delight in God. The chapter is also the source of the Beatitude "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."
Interpretive tension to watch
The psalmist says he has never seen the righteous abandoned or their children begging for bread (verse 25). Is this a promise, an observation from one long life, or the settled conviction of faith about how the story ends? Reading it alongside Psalm 73 and the book of Job keeps the verse honest: the psalm speaks of the long view and the final outcome, not a guarantee against every hardship along the way.

Psalm 37 begins where many honest prayers begin: with the sight of wrong people doing well. David does not deny it or explain it away. He counsels a different response. Three times he says "do not fret," and each time he replaces fretting with something to do: trust the LORD, do good, delight in him, commit your way, be still, wait. The psalm is an acrostic, working through the alphabet, and its shape is part of its message. There is no single argument that settles the problem of prosperous evil; there is a way of living through it, learned letter by letter. The wicked, David insists, are temporary. They wither like grass, vanish like smoke, and when you look for them they cannot be found. The righteous are held. Their steps are ordered, their little is better than abundance, and though they fall, the LORD is holding their hand. Five times the psalm promises that the meek will inherit the land, a line Jesus lifted whole into the Beatitudes. Read it slowly, and notice that it never asks you to stop seeing injustice. It asks you to stop letting injustice set the temperature of your heart.
