Judges 6 does not begin with heroic readiness. It begins with a people so crushed by Midian that they hide in fear, and with a man threshing wheat in a winepress to keep from being seen. That means the chapter is not mainly about discovering hidden greatness inside Gideon. It is about God confronting a humiliated, compromised people and beginning deliverance where faith is weak. In Judges 6:11-16, the angel of the Lord calls Gideon while Gideon is still full of objections, questions, and smallness. Then the chapter makes something else clear. Before Midian is faced in public, Baal must be confronted at home. In Judges 6:25-27, Gideon is told to tear down his father’s altar, because outward oppression is tied to inward unfaithfulness. Only then does the story move toward public conflict. By Judges 6:36-40, Gideon is still asking for confirmation, which means the chapter refuses both triumphalism and sentimental excuse. Judges 6 matters because it asks whether you want God’s deliverance without surrendering your hidden idols, and whether you can admit that weak faith must be purified before it can stand in open battle.
