Deuteronomy 8 is not a chapter for people who want God’s gifts without God’s rule. Moses looks back over the wilderness and refuses to call it wasted hardship. In Deuteronomy 8:2-5 he says the Lord led Israel there to humble them, test them, and teach them that man does not live by bread alone. The chapter therefore does not let suffering remain meaningless, and it also does not let prosperity remain innocent. Once Moses turns to the good land in Deuteronomy 8:10-14, the danger sharpens. Fullness can produce a heart that quietly forgets the God who carried, fed, disciplined, and preserved. That is why the warning reaches its point in Deuteronomy 8:17-18: “My power” is a lie of memory before it is a lie of speech. Deuteronomy 8 matters because it asks whether you can receive both lack and abundance as arenas where your heart is being exposed, or whether you will keep trying to enjoy God’s gifts while erasing God from the explanation.
