Psalm 104 is the Bible's great hymn of creation, a poet's tour of Genesis 1 in which God wraps himself in light, stretches out the heavens like a tent, rides the clouds, sets boundaries for the sea, waters the mountains, grows grass for cattle and wine for human hearts, and made Leviathan to play in the ocean. Psalm 104 is what happens when a poet reads Genesis 1 and cannot stop looking. It follows the days of creation in order, but where Genesis is spare, the psalm is lavish. God wraps himself in light like a robe and pitches the heavens like a tent. He rebukes the sea and it runs to its place. He sends springs down into the valleys where wild donkeys drink and birds sing in the branches. He grows grass for cattle and crops for people, and from the earth come wine to gladden the heart, oil to make the face shine, and bread to sustain it. Storks nest in the cypresses, wild goats keep to the high mountains, rock badgers hide in the cliffs. Lions hunt at night and go home at dawn when people go out to work. The sea teems with creatures beyond counting, and Leviathan, the monster other nations feared, was made by God to play. The psalm's center is verse 24: "How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You have made them all." Its theology is in verses 27 to 30: everything looks to God for food, everything dies when he withdraws his breath, and everything is created anew when he sends his Spirit. The psalm ends with the first Hallelujah in the Psalter. It earns it.

Historical and literary context

The psalm has no heading and follows the order of the six days of Genesis 1: light, the heavens, the separation of waters and land, vegetation, the sun and moon, animals and humanity. Its imagery of God riding the clouds and rebuking the waters uses language the surrounding cultures applied to their storm gods, and turns it into praise of the one Creator who made even the sea monster for sport. It is framed by the same call as Psalm 103, "Bless the LORD, O my soul," and the two psalms are read as a pair: God's mercy and God's works.

How the chapter unfolds

Verses 1 to 4 praise God in light, heavens, clouds, wind, and fire. Verses 5 to 9 recall the founding of the earth and the taming of the waters. Verses 10 to 18 follow the water down into springs, animals, birds, crops, wine, oil, bread, trees, and mountain creatures. Verses 19 to 23 turn to time: moon, sun, night when lions hunt, day when people work. Verses 24 to 30 marvel at the number of God's works, the sea and Leviathan, and every creature's dependence on God's hand, face, breath, and Spirit. Verses 31 to 35 ask that the LORD's glory endure, vow lifelong song, and end with a wish that sin would vanish from so good a world.

Why this chapter matters

Psalm 104 teaches that creation is not a finished machine but a world God actively sustains, feeding, renewing, and delighting in it. Its picture of God's Spirit sending forth life and renewing the face of the earth (verse 30) has shaped Christian prayer for the Holy Spirit. Verse 15, with wine that gladdens the heart, oil that makes the face shine, and bread that sustains, is one of Scripture's warmest affirmations of ordinary bodily goods. Hebrews 1 quotes verse 4 about the angels. The psalm has inspired hymns, including "O Worship the King," and remains the Bible's fullest example of praising God through attention to the natural world.

Interpretive tension to watch

After thirty-four verses of delight in creation, the psalm ends by wishing that sinners would vanish from the earth. Is that a jarring intrusion or the logical conclusion of the poem? The psalmist seems to reason that a world this good is marred by only one thing, and to pray that it be removed. How readers handle that last verse says a good deal about how they relate holiness to wonder.
