Mark 9 moves from the mountaintop to the valley and then to the road. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where he is transfigured, Moses and Elijah appear, and a voice from the cloud says, "This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!" Coming down, they find the other disciples unable to heal a boy with a violent spirit; the boy's father cries, "I do believe; help my unbelief!" and Jesus heals him. Then Jesus predicts his death a second time, catches the disciples arguing about who is greatest, sets a child among them, tells John not to stop an outsider driving out demons, and warns in the starkest terms against causing a little one to stumble, ending with salt and peace.

Mark 9 begins as high as the Gospel gets and comes down fast. Jesus takes three disciples up a mountain, and in front of them his clothes turn a white no launderer could produce, Moses and Elijah stand talking with him, and a voice from a cloud tells the disciples the one thing they most need to hear: this is my Son, listen to him. Peter, terrified, wants to build shelters and stay. They do not stay. At the bottom of the mountain there is a crowd, an argument, and a boy who has been thrown into fire and water by a spirit since he was small, and the disciples have failed to help him. His father's prayer is the most honest in the Bible, I believe, help my unbelief, and it is enough. Jesus lifts the boy by the hand, and later tells the disciples that this kind comes out only by prayer, which is to say, they had tried it on their own. The rest of the chapter is a walk through Galilee in which Jesus tells them again that he will be killed and rise, and they are too afraid to ask what he means, so they argue instead about which of them is the greatest. He answers with a child in his arms. Then John complains about an outsider driving out demons in Jesus' name, and Jesus refuses to stop him: whoever is not against us is for us. The chapter ends with some of the hardest words Jesus ever spoke, millstones and cut-off hands and unquenched fire, all aimed at one thing, taking sin and the harm done to the little ones as seriously as God does. And then, gently, salt, and peace with one another.

Historical and literary context

The high mountain is traditionally Tabor and more probably Hermon, near Caesarea Philippi where the previous chapter ends. Moses and Elijah, the lawgiver and the prophet, both met God on Sinai, and Malachi had promised Elijah's return before the day of the LORD, which is behind the disciples' question; Jesus identifies that Elijah with John the Baptist. Peter's offer of shelters recalls the Feast of Tabernacles. "Hell" in verses 43 to 48 translates Gehenna, the Valley of Hinnom south of Jerusalem, associated with child sacrifice and with Jeremiah's prophecies of judgment. Verses 44 and 46, which repeat verse 48, are absent from the earliest manuscripts, which is why most modern Bibles skip those numbers.

How the chapter unfolds

Verse 1 promises that some will see the kingdom come with power. Verses 2 to 8 are the transfiguration, and verses 9 to 13 the descent, with the command to silence and the discussion of Elijah. Verses 14 to 29 are the healing of the boy with the spirit, framed by the disciples' failure and their question about it. Verses 30 to 32 are the second passion prediction and the disciples' fear. Verses 33 to 37 concern greatness and the child. Verses 38 to 41 concern the outsider exorcist and the cup of water. Verses 42 to 50 are the sayings on stumbling blocks, cutting off hand, foot, and eye, and salt.

Why this chapter matters

"I do believe; help my unbelief!" in verse 24 is one of the most loved prayers in the Bible, the honest words of a father who has run out of options, and Jesus honors it. The transfiguration became a feast in both East and West and is the Gospel's clearest preview of the resurrection glory, placed deliberately between two predictions of the cross. "Whoever is not against us is for us" has governed Christian attitudes to those outside the group. The child in the midst, and the millstone for anyone who harms a little one, have shaped the church's teaching on the protection of children. The commands to cut off hand and foot are the Bible's strongest statement that sin is worth any cost to be rid of.

Interpretive tension to watch

Verse 1, that some standing there will not die before seeing the kingdom come with power, has been read as fulfilled six days later on the mountain, at the resurrection, at Pentecost, or at the fall of Jerusalem, and readers disagree. Verse 40, "whoever is not against us is for us," must be held beside Matthew 12:30, "whoever is not with Me is against Me"; the contexts differ, one about outsiders doing good, the other about insiders refusing to decide. The amputation sayings are hyperbole, but hyperbole that means what it says about seriousness. And "everyone will be salted with fire" in verse 49 is among the most obscure sentences in the Gospels.
