Deuteronomy 32 is the Song of Moses, the poem he taught Israel on the last day of his life as a witness against them. Deuteronomy 32 is the last song Moses sang, and he sang it as a witness for the prosecution. God had told him that Israel would break the covenant after his death, and had him write a song the people would carry in their mouths so that when disaster came they would know why. The song begins by calling heaven and earth as witnesses and naming God the Rock, perfect and just. It remembers how God found Israel in a howling wilderness, guarded them as the apple of his eye, carried them like an eagle carries its young, and fed them honey from the rock and the finest wheat. Then it tells what happens to people who are fed that well: Jeshurun, a pet name for Israel, grew fat and kicked, abandoned the God who made him, and sacrificed to demons. The judgment that follows is terrible, and it is restrained by only one thing, God's unwillingness to let the enemy say "our own hand has prevailed." So the song turns. When Israel's strength is gone, God will have compassion, mock the useless gods, and declare that he alone brings death and gives life, wounds and heals. The nations are invited to rejoice with his people. Then Moses tells Israel that these are not idle words but their very life, and God tells Moses to climb the mountain, look at the land, and die there. He had given the people everything; the one thing he could not give himself was the crossing.

Historical and literary context

Moses composed the song at God's command, recorded in the previous chapter, because God foresaw that Israel would break the covenant and wanted a witness that would outlive Moses in the people's mouths. It stands on the plains of Moab, just before the crossing of the Jordan, with the wilderness generation dead and Moses himself barred from the land for the failure at Meribah. The song's form resembles a covenant lawsuit, with witnesses summoned, benefits recited, breach charged, and sentence pronounced. The New Testament quotes it repeatedly.

How the chapter unfolds

Verses 1 to 6 summon heaven and earth, proclaim the Rock, and charge the people with corruption. Verses 7 to 14 remember God's election, care, and provision, from the wilderness to honey from the rock and the finest wheat. Verses 15 to 18 describe the apostasy of Jeshurun, fat and forgetful. Verses 19 to 27 announce judgment, fire, arrows, hunger, plague, sword, restrained only by God's concern for his name. Verses 28 to 35 expose Israel's folly and the enemies' rotten vine, and declare "Vengeance is Mine." Verses 36 to 43 promise vindication, mock the useless gods, and end with the nations called to rejoice with God's people. Verses 44 to 52 record Moses reciting the song, urging the people to take it to heart, and receiving the command to climb Nebo and die.

Why this chapter matters

The Song of Moses gave later Scripture some of its central language: God as the Rock, the eagle carrying its young, jealousy provoked by "that which is not God," and "Vengeance is Mine; I will repay," which Paul quotes in Romans 12 as the reason believers must not avenge themselves. Paul also quotes verse 21 in Romans 10 to explain the inclusion of the Gentiles, and verse 43 in Romans 15. Hebrews cites the song twice. Verse 39, "I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal," is one of the Old Testament's clearest statements of God's sole sovereignty. The song is also the last thing Moses gave Israel, and its final word to him is that he will see the land but not enter it.

Interpretive tension to watch

The song foretells Israel's failure before it happens and pronounces judgment in the same breath as promise. Is it a warning meant to prevent apostasy, a prophecy of what will certainly come, or both? And its violence, fire to Sheol and arrows drunk with blood, sits beside a God who carries his people on eagle's wings and relents when their strength is gone. The song does not soften either picture; it asks Israel to remember both.
