Salmos 5

Psalm 5 is a morning prayer. David lays his plea before the LORD at daybreak and waits, then sets two ways of life side by side: the boastful, deceitful, and violent who cannot stand in God's presence, and the worshiper who enters God's house by abundant loving devotion. He asks to be led in a straight way because enemies are watching, asks God to judge those whose throats are open graves, and ends with joy for all who take refuge in the LORD, whom he surrounds with the shield of his favor.

Psalm 5 is a prayer to be said before the day has had a chance to go wrong. "In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at daybreak I lay my plea before You and wait in expectation." David is not calm. He is groaning, he has enemies, and their weapon is speech: lies, boasting, throats like open graves. But he begins the day by arranging his case before God and then waiting to see what God will do with it. The psalm sets two ways of approaching God against each other. The boastful cannot stand in his presence; no evil can dwell with him. David can enter only "by the abundance of Your loving devotion," and he knows it, which is why his request is not for vindication on his own merits but to be led in a straight way with enemies watching. He asks God to judge the liars, and then the psalm opens outward to everyone who takes refuge in the LORD: let them rejoice, shelter them, bless the righteous, surround them with favor like a shield. Paul quoted this psalm to show that all people are under sin; it is also a psalm that shows what a person under mercy does with the morning.

Historischer und literarischer Kontext

The heading assigns the psalm to David and to the choirmaster, with flutes, which marks it for public worship. Its language of entering God's house and bowing toward the holy temple fits the sanctuary at Jerusalem. The enemies are not foreign armies but liars and men of bloodshed within the community, whose speech is the weapon. Paul quoted verse 9, "their throats are open graves," in Romans 3 as part of his case that all people are under sin.

Wie sich das Kapitel entfaltet

Verses 1 to 3 are the opening cry and the morning vow to lay a plea before God and wait. Verses 4 to 6 describe what God cannot tolerate: wickedness, boasting, lying, bloodshed, deceit. Verses 7 and 8 contrast the psalmist, who enters God's house by loving devotion and asks to be led in a straight path. Verses 9 and 10 return to the enemies, whose words cannot be trusted, and ask God to let them fall by their own devices. Verses 11 and 12 widen out to all who take refuge in the LORD: joy, shelter, blessing, and a shield of favor.

Warum dieses Kapitel wichtig ist

Psalm 5 is the Bible's model of beginning the day in prayer. "In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at daybreak I lay my plea before You and wait in expectation" has shaped morning devotion for centuries. Its contrast between those who enter by their own merit and those who enter by God's loving devotion anticipates the New Testament's teaching on grace. And its final image, the righteous surrounded by favor as by a shield, offers a picture of security that does not depend on the enemies falling silent.

Auslegungsfrage im Blick behalten

Verse 5 says God hates all workers of iniquity, and verse 10 asks God to declare the enemies guilty. How do these sit with the psalmist's own admission that he enters God's house only by loving devotion, not by right? The psalm holds both: God's settled opposition to evil, and the worshiper's dependence on mercy. Reading verse 7 as the hinge keeps the psalm from becoming self-righteous.

Fragen zu diesem Kapitel

  • Verse 3 pairs laying a plea before God with waiting in expectation. Which half is harder for you in the morning?
  • The psalmist enters God's house "by the abundance of Your loving devotion," not by his own standing. How does that change how you approach prayer?
  • The enemies in this psalm attack with words. Where do words rather than weapons threaten you, and what does the psalm do with that threat?
