Matthew 25 is Jesus' last teaching before the passion begins, and it answers a question the disciples had asked on the Mount of Olives: how do we live until you come back? He answers with three stories. In the first, ten bridesmaids wait for a groom who is late, and all of them fall asleep; the difference is not that the wise stayed awake but that they had brought oil, and when the cry comes at midnight, readiness turns out to be something you cannot borrow. In the second, a man going abroad hands his fortune to three servants in different amounts, and comes home to find that two have put it to work and one has buried it out of fear. The reward for the two is identical, which means the master was measuring faithfulness, not results. The third is judged not for losing the money but for being too afraid of his master to try. In the last, the Son of Man sits on his throne and divides the whole human race like a shepherd sorting sheep from goats at evening, and the question is not what they believed but what they did about hunger, thirst, strangers, nakedness, sickness, and prison. Both groups are surprised; neither knew that the person in need was Jesus. The chapter's three lessons are one lesson: the time between now and his coming is not a waiting room. It is the test.

The chapter is the second half of the Olivet Discourse, spoken on the Mount of Olives in the last week before the crucifixion, after the disciples asked about the end of the age. Village weddings involved a night-time procession in which the groom came to fetch the bride while attendants waited with torches or lamps. A talent was a weight of silver worth roughly twenty years of a laborer's wages, so even the one-talent servant held a fortune. Shepherds in Palestine grazed sheep and goats together by day and separated them at night, since goats need more shelter. The works of mercy in verses 35 and 36 match the duties Jewish tradition drew from Isaiah 58 and Job 31.
