Glory is tied to finished obedience, not self-display

Jesus speaks of glory at the threshold of the cross. That alone reshapes the word. Divine glory here is inseparable from the Son’s finished work and the revelation of eternal life through knowing the Father.
Protection is not removal from the world but sanctification inside it

John 17 lets the church overhear the Son speaking to the Father at the edge of the cross. That alone gives the chapter unusual weight. But the prayer is not vague spiritual comfort. In John 17:1-5, Jesus speaks first of glory, finished work, and eternal life defined as knowing the Father and the Son. Then the prayer turns outward. In John 17:14-19, Jesus does not ask that his disciples be removed from the world, but that they be kept and sanctified within it by the truth. That means mission and holiness are joined. And by John 17:20-23, the prayer extends to future believers, pressing toward a unity that is rooted in divine truth and shared life, not mere human agreement. John 17 matters because it asks whether the church wants the kind of unity and protection Christ actually prays for, or only versions that cost less than sanctification and truth.
