Genesis 1:1 does not begin by defending God. It begins with him already there, already acting, already claiming the first word over reality.

Everything in the chapter depends on this opening line. Light, order, life, and humanity all arrive under the authority of the Creator, not as self-originating forces.
The verse will not let the reader treat the world as spiritually neutral. If God is first, then nothing is finally yours to define apart from him.
Genesis 1:1 is not trying to satisfy modern curiosity about process before it establishes the Creator-creature order.
John echoes Genesis to show that the Word who stands at the beginning of creation also stands at the beginning of new creation.
Hebrews makes explicit that the worlds were framed by God’s word, not by visible self-generation.

Genesis opens by placing God before everything else. The first pressure of the text is not to satisfy curiosity about process but to establish that all reality begins under his authority and by his word.
The passage does not allow the reader to approach creation as neutral material. It demands that the reader first reckon with the Creator.
