Romans 8:1 announces a verdict no sinner could ever secure by effort: no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

The verse answers the agony of Romans 7 by moving the reader away from self-measurement and into God’s decisive act in Christ. The rest of the chapter shows that this verdict produces Spirit-governed life.

Paul’s declaration of no condemnation rests on God’s decisive action in Christ. It is not permission for the flesh to relax. The same saving act that removes condemnation also establishes a Spirit-governed life.
