Luke 8 is one of the busiest chapters in the Gospels, and it begins with a detail only Luke gives: the movement was funded by women. Mary Magdalene, freed from seven demons, Joanna, whose husband ran Herod's household, Susanna, and many others paid the bills as Jesus went from town to town. Then the parable that Jesus said explains all the others. A farmer flings seed, and it lands on a path, on rock, among thorns, and on good ground, and what happens next depends entirely on the ground. The seed, he explains, is the word of God, and the soils are hearts, and the only one that bears a crop is the one that hears, holds on, and keeps going. After that, four events in quick succession show what the word can do. A storm on the lake, a boat filling with water, disciples screaming that they are dying, and a man who wakes up, tells the wind to stop, and asks them where their faith is. A naked man living among tombs, chained and breaking chains, possessed by a legion, who ends the story clothed and sane at Jesus' feet, sent home to tell his town what God did. A woman who has bled for twelve years and spent everything on doctors, who touches the edge of his cloak in a crowd and is called out of hiding to be called daughter. And a synagogue ruler's twelve-year-old girl, dead before Jesus reaches the house, who hears him say child, get up, and gets up hungry. Who is this, the disciples ask in the boat. The chapter is the answer.

Historical and literary context

Luke alone records the women who financed Jesus' ministry; Joanna's husband managed Herod Antipas's household, which places support for Jesus inside the tetrarch's court. The parable of the sower reflects Palestinian farming, where seed was broadcast before plowing and paths, rock shelves, and thorns ran through the fields. Sudden windstorms on the Sea of Galilee are caused by air rushing down from the surrounding hills. The Gerasenes lived in the Decapolis, Gentile territory east of the lake, which explains the pigs. The woman with the bleeding was ritually unclean under Leviticus 15 and would have made anyone she touched unclean. Jairus led a synagogue; his daughter at twelve stood at the edge of adulthood.

How the chapter unfolds

Verses 1 to 3 describe the traveling company and the women. Verses 4 to 15 give the parable of the sower, the reason for parables, and the explanation. Verses 16 to 18 add the lamp and the warning to listen well. Verses 19 to 21 redefine family around hearing and doing the word. Verses 22 to 25 narrate the storm. Verses 26 to 39 tell of the Gerasene demoniac, Legion, the pigs, the townspeople's fear, and the man's commission. Verses 40 to 56 interweave Jairus's plea, the healing of the bleeding woman, the news of the girl's death, and her raising.

Why this chapter matters

The parable of the sower is the parable Jesus himself explained and the one he said unlocks the others, and its four soils have been the church's basic picture of how the word is received. "Where is your faith?" on the lake, "Who touched Me?" in the crowd, and "Child, get up" at the bedside are among the Gospel's most vivid scenes and have been painted, preached, and sung for centuries. The women of verses 1 to 3 are the first named financial supporters of the Christian movement. The healed demoniac sent home to tell his story is Luke's picture of the first Gentile witness, and the woman who touched the cloak is the model of faith that reaches out in secret and is called into the open.

Interpretive tension to watch

Jesus says he speaks in parables "so that" outsiders may not understand, quoting Isaiah 6, a hard saying that readers soften as a description of what happens or take at face value as judgment. The destruction of the pigs, and the loss to their owners, sits uneasily with modern readers, as does the townspeople's request that Jesus leave. Whether the woman's healing "took power out of" Jesus without his will is a question the text raises and leaves. The girl is called "asleep" while everyone knows she is dead, and Jesus' command to tell no one contradicts the demoniac's command to tell everyone, a contrast that depends on the audience.

क्यूँकि जिसके पास नहीं है वो भी ले लिया जाएगा जो अपना समझता है।” 19 फिर उसकी माँ और उसके भाई उसके पास आए, मगर भीड़ की वजह से उस तक न पहुँच सके। 20 और उसे ख़बर दी गई, “तेरी माँ और तेरे भाई बाहर खड़े हैं, और तुझ से मिलना चाहते हैं।” 21 उसने जवाब में उनसे कहा, “मेरी माँ और मेरे भाई तो ये हैं, जो ख़ुदा का कलाम सुनते और उस पर 'अमल करते हैं।” 22 फिर एक दिन ऐसा हुआ कि वो और उसके शागिर्द नाव में सवार हुए। उसने उनसे कहा, “आओ, झील के पार चलें” वो सब रवाना हुए। 23 मगर जब नाव चली जाती थी तो वो सो गया। और झील पर बड़ी आँधी आई और नाव पानी से भरी जाती थी और वो ख़तरे में थे। 24 उन्होंने पास आकर उसे जगाया और कहा, “साहेब! साहेब! हम हलाक हुए जाते हैं!” उसने उठकर हवा को और पानी के ज़ोर — शोर को झिड़का और दोनों थम गए और अम्न हो गया। 25 उसने उनसे कहा, “तुम्हारा ईमान कहाँ गया?” वो डर गए और ता'अज्जुब करके आपस में कहने लगे, “ये कौन है? ये तो हवा और पानी को हुक्म देता है और वो उसकी मानते हैं!” 26 फिर वो गिरासीनियों के 'इलाक़े में जा पहुँचे जो उस पार गलील के सामने है। 27 जब वो किनारे पर उतरा तो शहर का एक मर्द उसे मिला जिसमें बदरूहें थीं, और उसने बड़ी मुद्दत से कपड़े न पहने थे और वो घर में नहीं बल्कि क़ब्रों में रहा करता था। 28 वो ईसा को देख कर चिल्लाया और उसके आगे गिर कर बुलन्द आवाज़ से कहने लगा, “ऐ ईसा! ख़ुदा के बेटे, मुझे तुझ से क्या काम? मैं तेरी मिन्नत करता हूँ कि मुझे 'ऐज़ाब में न डाल।” 29 क्यूँकि वो उस बदरूह को हुक्म देता था कि इस आदमी में से निकल जा, इसलिए कि उसने उसको अक्सर पकड़ा था; और हर चन्द लोग उसे ज़ंजीरों और बेड़ियों से जकड़ कर क़ाबू में रखते थे, तो भी वो ज़ंजीरों को तोड़ डालता था और बदरूह उसको वीरानों में भगाए फिरती थी। 30 ईसा ने उससे पूछा, “तेरा क्या नाम है?” उसने कहा, “लश्कर!” क्यूँकि उसमें बहुत सी बदरूहें थीं। 31 और वो उसकी मिन्नत करने लगीं कि “हमें गहरे गड्ढे में जाने का हुक्म न दे।” 32 वहाँ पहाड़ पर सूअरों का एक बड़ा ग़ोल चर रहा था। उन्होंने उसकी मिन्नत की कि हमें उनके अन्दर जाने दे; उसने उन्हें जाने दिया। 33 और बदरूहें उस आदमी में से निकल कर सूअरों के अन्दर गईं और ग़ोल किनारे पर से झपट कर झील में जा पड़ा और डूब मरा। 34 ये माजरा देख कर चराने वाले भागे और जाकर शहर और गाँव में ख़बर दी। 35 लोग उस माजरे को देखने को निकले, और ईसा के पास आकर उस आदमी को जिसमें से बदरूहें निकली थीं, कपड़े पहने और होश में ईसा के पाँव के पास बैठे पाया और डर गए। 36 और देखने वालों ने उनको ख़बर दी कि जिसमें बदरूहें थीं वो किस तरह अच्छा हुआ। 37 गिरासीनियों के आस पास के सब लोगों ने उससे दरख़्वास्त की कि हमारे पास से चला जा; क्यूँकि उन पर बड़ी दहशत छा गई थी। पस वो नाव में बैठकर वापस गया। 38 लेकिन जिस शख़्स में से बदरूहें निकल गई थीं, वो उसकी मिन्नत करके कहने लगा कि मुझे अपने साथ रहने दे, मगर ईसा ने उसे रुख़्सत करके कहा, 39 “अपने घर को लौट कर लोगों से बयान कर, कि ख़ुदा ने तेरे लिए कैसे बड़े काम किए हैं।” वो रवाना होकर तमाम शहर में चर्चा करने लगा कि ईसा ने मेरे लिए कैसे बड़े काम किए। 40 जब ईसा वापस आ रहा था तो लोग उससे ख़ुशी के साथ मिले, क्यूँकि सब उसकी राह देखते थे। 41 और देखो, याईर नाम एक शख़्स जो 'इबादतख़ाने का सरदार था, आया और ईसा के क़दमों पे गिरकर उससे मिन्नत की कि मेरे घर चल, 42 क्यूँकि उसकी इकलौती बेटी जो तक़रीबन बारह बरस की थी, मरने को थी। और जब वो जा रहा था तो लोग उस पर गिरे पड़ते थे। 43 और एक 'औरत ने जिसके बारह बरस से ख़ून जारी था, और अपना सारा माल हकीमों पर ख़र्च कर चुकी थी, और किसी के हाथ से अच्छी न हो सकी थी; 44 उसके पीछे आकर उसकी पोशाक का किनारा हुआ, और उसी दम उसका ख़ून बहना बन्द हो गया। 45 इस पर ईसा ने कहा, “वो कौन है जिसने मुझे छुआ?” जब सब इन्कार करने लगे तो पतरस और उसके साथियों ने कहा, “ऐ साहेब! लोग तुझे दबाते और तुझ पर गिरे पड़ते हैं।” 46 मगर ईसा ने कहा, “किसी ने मुझे छुआ तो है, क्यूँकि मैंने मा'लूम किया कि क़ुव्वत मुझ से निकली है।” 47 जब उस 'औरत ने देखा कि मैं छिप नहीं सकती, तो वो काँपती हुई आई और उसके आगे गिरकर सब लोगों के सामने बयान किया कि मैंने किस वजह से तुझे छुआ, और किस तरह उसी दम शिफ़ा पा गई। 48 उसने उससे कहा, “बेटी! तेरे ईमान ने तुझे अच्छा किया है, सलामत चली जा।” 49 वो ये कह ही रहा था कि 'इबादतख़ाने के सरदार के यहाँ से किसी ने आकर कहा, तेरी बेटी मर गई: उस्ताद को तकलीफ़ न दे।” 50 ईसा ने सुनकर जवाब दिया, “ख़ौफ़ न कर; फ़क़त 'ऐतिक़ाद रख, वो बच जाएगी।” 51 और घर में पहुँचकर पतरस, यूहन्ना और या'क़ूब और लड़की के माँ बाप के सिवा किसी को अपने साथ अन्दर न जाने दिया। 52 और सब उसके लिए रो पीट रहे थे, मगर उसने कहा, “मातम न करो! वो मर नहीं गई बल्कि सोती है।” 53 वो उस पर हँसने लगे क्यूँकि जानते थे कि वो मर गई है। 54 मगर उसने उसका हाथ पकड़ा और पुकार कर कहा, “ऐ लड़की, उठ!“ 55 उसकी रूह वापस आई और वो उसी दम उठी। फिर ईसा ने हुक्म दिया, लड़की को कुछ खाने को दिया जाए।” 56 माँ बाप हैरान हुए। उसने उन्हें ताकीद की कि ये माजरा किसी से न कहना।
